Men's and Women's Cross Country Picked First in NEWMAC Polls

Boston, Mass. (August 26) -- In the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the MIT men's and women's cross country teams have both been chosen as the preseason favorites to repeat as NEWMAC Conference Champions. The men's team received seven first-place votes, while the women's squad earned 10 first-place votes.

Under the direction of 2015 NEWMAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year Halston Taylor, the Engineers captured the program's 18th straight league title last season with a total of 17 points at the league meet. Senior Colin Goodwin (Cary, N.C.) leads the returning group on the team after earning 2015 NEWMAC Runner of the Year honors, while sophomore Daniel Weiss (Naperville, Ill.) was the league's Rookie of the Year a season ago.

On the women's side, the team totaled 19 points at last year's NEWMAC Championship to earn the program's ninth straight league title. Senior Maryann Gong (Livermore, Calif.) was the 2015 NEWMAC Runner of the Year and leads the returners after eventually placing 16th overall at the NCAA Division III National Championship. Sophomore Leandra Zimmerman (Augsburg, Germany) also returns in 2016 after being named as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman.
