CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — MIT announced today its team schedules for the 2010-11 winter season. Eleven teams will compete, beginning with the rifle squad, whose season kicks off on October 2. A number of teams, including the men’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving and men’s and women’s track & field are coming off extremely successful seasons, which culminated in appearances at their respective NCAA Championships. The women’s basketball, men’s and women’s fencing, squash and men’s volleyball schedules were also released.
The Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams will each welcome 12 opponents into Rockwell Cage in 2010-11. The men kick things off on November 16 against Emmanuel at 7:00 p.m. The women’s home opener comes one week later, November 23, against Pine Manor at 6:00 p.m., in the first game of a doubleheader that night.
The fencing squads open their seasons at The Big One on November 6, hosted by Smith College. Both teams will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championship, which takes place the weekend of March 13 and is hosted by Sacred Heart this year.
Squash will host four events at the Zesiger Squash Courts, including an Invitational on January 22 and 23. The Engineers open the season against Boston College and Boston University on November 6.
Coming off historic finishes at last year’s NCAA Division III Championship, where the men finished eighth and the women 14th, the MIT swimming & diving teams will look to continue their recent run of success. The Engineers welcome in conference foes Coast Guard and Springfield on January 16, as well as Tufts on January 22. The Zesiger Pool will also play host to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Championship, on February 25-27, for the first time since hosting the women’s meet in 2009. The NEWMAC Women’s Championship will take place at Mount Holyoke College from February 18-20.
The men’s and women’s track and field squads will open the indoor season at the Northeastern Invitational on December 4. Three indoor meets will take place at the Shobrys and Aronson Track, including a pair of Invitational meets on January 29 and February 12. The Engineers also compete against Williams College and Coast Guard Academy on February 5.
Men’s volleyball will open on January 11 at Wentworth, for the first of four straight road matches to start the season. The Engineers’ home debut is the following week, January 18, against Newbury College. Tech hosts its annual Invitational on the weekend of March 4-5 and welcomes 11 other opponents to Rockwell Cage throughout the season.
