A Message From Julie Soriero, Director of Athletics and Department Head DAPER
As summer starts to wind down and we begin to prepare for the start of another academic and competitive year at MIT, I reflect back on the truly historic year we had in DAPER in 2011-2012.
From our men’s basketball team reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history to Wyatt Ubellacker representing MIT at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, it was truly a remarkable year. We also saw continued success with our club sports, physical education and intramural programs as well.
For a third straight year we finished 11th in the Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings, which rank the nation’s best overall athletics programs. At one point in the season we were ranked as high as fourth in the standings. Our varsity athletics teams won 10 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships this season, the most ever for MIT, while 14 of our teams were represented at NCAA Championship competition.
In addition to varsity athletics, our department continues to enrich the lives of MIT students through our other programs as well, providing the opportunity to learn life lessons and skills outside of the classroom. Our Physical Education program is thriving, adding several new courses and continuing the popular extreme PE classes. We will also be adding a new, full-time, physical education instructor to the staff this fall. The quality of our recreational programs rose to all-time highs, our club sports expanded its opportunities and successfully hosted the national championships in Sport Taekwondo and intramurals also remains a popular program for both our students and campus community.
We also continued our success in the classroom. Our student-athletes earned 13 Academic All-America honors this past season, a school record, and MIT collected more academic all-conference awards than any other school in the NEWMAC. We also had two MIT student-athletes presented with NCAA Elite 89 Awards, an award presented to the participant at their national championship competition with the highest cumulative GPA of all the competitors at that championship.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our graduating seniors. Their leadership has played a major role in our recent success and has certainly laid the groundwork for our future success as well. All of our student-athletes, coaches, teachers and support staff have done a tremendous job this past year. Also a part of that success is our alumni, family and friends – your support is vital to the overall success of our programs in DAPER.
Thank you to all who have supported us in our endeavors this past year. If you have not had the opportunity to make a donation, please consider making a gift to DAPER by clicking here. Our success and programs would not be possible without your assistance and support.
