Dear MIT parents, student-athletes and fans:

Welcome to MIT Intercollegiate Athletics! We have an outstanding athletics program here at MIT, one that offers unique and challenging opportunities to our student-athletes.

I am pleased to say that we had a very successful year in 2013-14. MIT won 10 championships in our primary conference, the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). At the end of the academic year MIT was awarded its second consecutive President’s Cup, the NEWMAC’s all-sports trophy, for men’s programs while finishing second on the women’s side. We also saw continued success with our club sports, physical education and intramural programs as well.

In the Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings, which rank the nation’s best overall athletics programs we finished eighth, the best-ever finish for MIT, and our second straight top-10 finish. In addition to our NEWMAC Championships, we saw 22 of our teams represented at NCAA Championships or other national championship level competitions.  Cimran Virdi ’16 brought home an individual national championship, taking the women’s indoor pole vault title in March.

We also continued our success in the classroom; our student-athletes earned 15 Academic All-America honors this past season, matching our previous high, and MIT collected more academic all-conference awards than any other school in the NEWMAC.  Joey Rafidi ’14 of our men’s fencing team was recognized for his academic achievement with an NCAA Elite 89 Award, an honor presented to the participant at their national championship competition with the highest cumulative GPA.  We also had student-athletes earn several other academic achievements, including a Marshall Scholar and three NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships.

As a department we are committed to our core values - the pursuit of Excellence in creating an environment that:  develops Community; provides Education; inspires Leadership; and promotes Wellness. We are very proud of our accomplishments as a department in the last year and we look forward to even more success in 2014-15.
