CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT found the back of the cage in each quarter as it went on to defeat Smith College, 4-0, in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday at Jack Barry Field.
Jane Tortorella powered the Engineers with two goals.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 4, Smith 0
- Records: MIT (10-6 Overall, 6-2 NEWMAC); Smith (8-9 Overall, 3-6 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT opened the scoring after 2:50 elapsed when Tortorella knocked in the rebound of a saved shot.
- Following a pair of Smith penalty corners early in the second quarter, the Engineers extended their lead after Drew Hussar redirected a feed from Janie Thomas during a penalty corner in the 25th minute.
- The Bears almost ended the shutout during the final 10 seconds of the half. Anouk Bosket sent a through ball that was collected by Callahan Day just inside the top of the circle. Maeve Zimmer came out of the cage and forced Day towards the far post. Day attempted to hit the ball back to the circle, but Hussar deflected it and controlled possession as time expired.
- Natasha Parker gave MIT a 3-0 advantage just 20 seconds into the third quarter as her shot from the top of the circle went to the far post, marking the first goal of her career.
- Tortorella recorded the final goal of the day on a penalty corner with Meredith Wu and Hussar earning assists.
- Smith almost got on the scoreboard with 6:02 remaining, however, a shot by Ellie Szostalo was blocked.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In net, neither Zimmer nor Alexia Ninios were forced to make a save for the Engineers.
- For the Bears, Iseul Park made six saves in the first half while Aiden Arrington turned away one shot in the second half.
- MIT ended the day with advantages in shots (15-4), shots on goal (11-0), and penalty corners (8-4).

- MIT will host Roger Williams University in a non-conference game on Wednesday, October 29 at 6:00 PM.
- Smith will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, November 1 when it visits NEWMAC foe WPI for a 12:00 PM game.
