CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT set an Institute record in air rifle as the Engineers split the overall matches with the U.S. Naval Academy and Wentworth Institute of Technology. MIT totaled 4,435 points, including the school record score of 2251 in air rifle. Navy took the competition with an overall score of 4,456, while Wentworth had a score of 4,150.
MIT scored a 2184 in the smallbore portion of the match, with Navy winning that portion of the match with a 2273 and Wentworth taking third with a 2042. Navy also turned in the high score in air rifle, with the Midshipmen totaling a 2203, with MIT following with its 2251 and Wentworth turning in a The Engineers took the air rifle match with 2222 points, with John Jay totaling 2164 and Wentworth 2040. Both of MIT's scores were season bests.
De Bruijn shot a 566 in air rifle for the second best mark on the team in that event. Phillips was next with a 558, with Batista just seven points back at 551. Sophomore Kaiying Liao (Issaquah, Wash.) finished off the record scoring day for MIT with a 532.
Steven Frazier had the top smallbore score for Navy with a 571, while Midshipman Ryan Williams paced the competitors in air rifle with his 581.
MIT will shoot again next week when it travels to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Nov. 5 for a 9:00 a.m. match.
