• MIT Finishes 11th in Directors’ Cup Rankings

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Coming on the heels of one of the most successful campaigns in Institute history, MIT placed 11th among all Division III schools in the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This was the highest ranking for the Engineers in the 14-year history of the program and the first time they were the best performers in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The MIT sailing team competed at the Fowle Trophy NEISA Team Racing Championship hosted by Salve Regina University this past weekend. The Engineers finished in ninth place out of 12 teams with a 2-3 record.

    BOSTON, Mass. – In one of its steadier outings of the campaign, the MIT sailing team finished fourth out of 15 teams at the George Morris Trophy hosted by Boston University this past weekend. Both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions each scored a 45 to land safely ahead of Brown University, which totaled a 112 overall.

Freshman skipper Mark Van De Loo and sophomore crew Roberto Melendez led the B-Division with a score of 16, missing first place by just two points to overall winner Tufts University.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior captain and skipper Toan Tran-Phu and freshman crew Alix de Monts were named U.S. Sailing’s College Sailors of the Week for their outstanding performance in this past weekend’s Longfellow Bridge Invitational at Harvard University. Tran-Phu and de Monts waved off winds ranging from 7-20 knots to win the ‘B’ circuit as the Engineers placed second overall to Boston College.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – One of the two MIT sailing squads entering the inaugural Longfellow Bridge Invitational danced to a terrific second place finish out of 16 New England teams this past weekend at Harvard University. By all counts, the Engineers were sensational in winds that ranged from 7-20 knots swinging west-to-northwest on Saturday and southwest to northwest on Sunday, which caused many capsizes along the W-3 and W-4 courses.

A-Division Skipper Andrew Sommer and crews Eben Freeman, Steven Drapcho, and Mark Van De Loo registered a combined 11 top-10 and finishes and three top-five slots among the 13 races along the Charles River.

Leighton and Reed copped First-Team honors while Palmer was tabbed to the Second Team. The trio was among 20 outstanding nationwide sailors who received the recognition.

With no wind on Sunday, the 16 rounds between the circuits were all raced in Saturday’s 4-8 knot southeast breeze as abundant rain poured along the Charles River.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The host MIT sailing team finished seventh out of 18 entries, besting several other rival New England schools, at the Hatch Brown Trophy this past weekend. A-Division skipper Joshua Leighton and crew Victoria Lee and C-team leader Philip Crain and crew Stephanie Tong placed fifth in their circuits, hoisting the Engineers one slot better overall than neighboring foe Tufts University. Boston College won the event with a score of 316.
  • MIT Hosts Inaugural Schuman Regatta

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT sailing team hosted the inaugural Antonia Schuman '58 Regatta this past weekend. Schuman, the current President of the MIT Alumni Association, was the first woman to win a varsity letter at the Institute.
