MEDFORD, Mass. - A stunning sixth-place finish by A-Division skipper Josh Leighton and crews Lisa Schlecht and Victoria Lee boosted the MIT sailing team into tenth place overall out of 24 teams at the Hood Trophy hosted by Tufts University this past weekend.
With erratic winds settling into a 5-7 knot breeze along the sunny Mystic Lake, Leighton, Schlecht and Lee amassed seven top-10 slots among the ten races, including a first-place mark in the sixth round. The trio out-raced Tufts and Harvard University in the circuit, though the Jumbos and the Crimson placed third and fifth, respectively, overall. Leighton, Schlecht and Lee finished with a score of 79.
In B-Division, skippers Andrew Sommer and Eamon Glackin teamed with Lee and Schlecht to finish 15th in their group, with Glackin and Schlecht topping the board in the ninth race.
Roger Williams University won the event with a total score of 112. Rounding out the top five were Salve Regina University, Tufts, Yale University, and Harvard.
MIT also shined in A-Division at the Central Series at Boston University, as the Engineers placed ninth overall out of 17 entries. Skippers Toan Tran-Phu and Desiree Amadeo totaled six top-five slots among the 12 rounds, with Katie Gullick and Rachel Licht in tow. The group finished second in the third and seventh rounds.
Boston College won the event with a score of 88. Rounding out the top five were Boston University, Dartmouth College, University of Vermont, and Harvard.
