Frosh Among the Posh, Finish Sixth at Freshman New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT freshman sailing team ruled much of the waters this past weekend, finishing sixth out of 17 teams at the Freshman New England Championships’ Nickerson Trophy hosted by Boston University. A-Division Skipper Andrew Sommer and crews Eben Freeman, Steven Drapcho, and Mark Van De Loo registered a combined 11 top-10 and finishes and three top-five slots among the 13 races along the Charles River. Freeman was in tow for the bulk of the competition, racing in the first two rounds and circuits 5-12, as the Engineers finished with an overall score of 187.

Boston College won the event with a tally of 128. Rounding out the top five were Brown University (132), Tufts University (150), Roger Williams University (167), and Dartmouth College (173).

Meanwhile, the host MIT coed sailing team finished 12th of 20 entries at the Erwin Schell Trophy. B-Division leaders Eamon Glackin and Philip Crain and crews Lisa Schlecht and Adrienne Tran finished ninth in their circuit. Yale University rallied in the last set to edge Roger Williams University, 262-276, for the top spot.

The Engineers also placed 10th of 16 teams at the Victorian Coffee Urn Trophy hosted by Harvard University. B-Division Skipper Katie Gullick and crew Jillian Reddy finished in eighth place. Boston College won the event with a score of 57, while Connecticut College followed with a tally of 63.
