CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Making a big splash at
the 132nd Oberg Trophy, C-Division skipper David
Alfonso and crew Jillian Reddy posted a stunning
third-place finish in their circuit as host and nationally-ranked
No. 20 MIT slotted eighth overall out of 17 teams on Sunday.
With a fresh 8-14 knot west-to-north-west breeze swirling along the
Charles River, Alfonso and Reddy placed atop the board
three times while amassing six top-five finishes among the 12 races
in their group. After a slow start in which it finished 16th and
14th in the second and third tilts, Tech’s dynamic duo poured
it on in the next nine rounds, slotting no worse than fifth after
the seventh round.
B-Division skipper Phil Crain and crew Lisa Schlecht opened with
two first-place marks and finished ninth in their circuit, while
A-Division leader Eamon Glackin and Kelden Pehr placed 10th,
scoring two sixth-place slots in the latter rounds and a
third-place mark in an earlier race.
Dartmouth College won the event with a total score of 209. Rounding
out the top five were Salve Regina University, University of
Vermont, Roger Williams University, and Tufts University. As the
top team in Greater Boston, Tufts won the Greater Boston Seasonal
Championship, which is entwined with the Oberg Trophy that honors
the late Northeastern team advisor Rudolph Oberg.
