Sailors Open Spring Season at Sharpe Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Amid bright skies and warm temperatures along the glistening Charles River, the MIT sailing team competed well in the spring opening Sharpe Trophy this past weekend. The Engineers were among four teams that posted a 5-5 ledger after two round-robin circuits before settling for an 8-10 mark and the sixth slot out of as many teams.

Competing for the Cardinal and Gray were skippers Josh Leighton, Eamon Glackin, Andrew Sommer, and Phil Crain, and crew Victoria Lee, Elizabeth Hass, Rachel Licht, Leigh Casadaban, and Lisa Schlecht.

In all, 53 races were sailed at the two-day event held at MIT and run by Harvard University. Tufts University (11-6) took the top slot, defeating Brown University (9-8) in the final. Harvard (11-7) posted the second-best record but finished third, after being eliminated from the title in the bracketed rounds. Boston College (8-10) and Roger Williams University (6-12) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Winds ranged from 2-10 knots from the west to northeast, though mostly west to northwest on Sunday. The boaters raced in MIT and Harvard 420s along a Collegiate Digital N course.
