MIT Finishes 11th in Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Rankings
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second year in a row MIT placed 11th among all Division III schools in the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. The Engineers’ Institute-best finish once again registered as the highest performance by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

Women’s Sailing Finishes 12th at Reed Trophy, Misses out on Nationals
HAPRSWELL, Maine – A pair of juniors and a pair of seniors represented the MIT women’s sailing team last weekend, sailing to a 12th place finish at the Reed Trophy. Fourteen schools travelled to Maine to contest Women’s New England Championships hosted by Bowdoin College, with the top 7 earning berths to Nationals.

Strong B-Division Performance Paces Co-Ed Sailing
NARRAGANSETT, RI – Using a sixth place showing from their B-Division boats, the MIT co-ed sailing team took 12th place at this weekend’s NEISA Co-ed Dinghy Championships. The Engineers competed against 18 schools at Roger Wheeler State Beach, with the top 8 teams advancing to the semi-finals in Long Beach.

Sailing Welcomes Schools for Midweek Tech Invite
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Eleven teams from five different colleges came to the Charles River on Wednesday afternoon to participate in the fourth Midweek Tech Regatta of the year, hosted by the MIT sailing team. MIT had two boats sail in the field that also included teams from Harvard, Northeastern, Wellesley and Babson.

Women’s Sailing Has Top Ten Finish at President’s Trophy
BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT women’s sailing team didn’t have to travel far this weekend and were able to return home with a 9th place finish at the President’s Trophy hosted by Boston University. The Cardinal and Grey amassed 170 points in the sixteen-team field and competed over the course of two days.

Co-Ed Sailing Takes 7th at BU Trophy
BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT sailing team came away with a seventh place finish over the weekend, competing at the Boston University Trophy. The event featured 14 schools from New England, competing in 14 races in FJ boats over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

Engineers Tops in Sunshine State Team Race
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The MIT co-ed sailing team took first place out of a nine-school field last weekend at the Mendelbatt Team Race hosted by Eckerd College. MIT beat College of Charleston 2-1 in the final head to head races to capture the title on Sunday in South Florida.

Engineers Place Eighth at Wood Trophy
NEWPORT, RI – The MIT co-ed sailing team travelled to Salve Regina University this weekend and came home with an eighth place finish in the Wood Trophy. The conference regatta was contested over two days and featured twelve boats from eleven schools across the New England region. MIT finished with 169 points.

MIT Sailing Gets Back in the Water with Third Place Finish
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The MIT sailing team returned from its winter break on Sunday when it competed at the Sharpe Trophy races. The Engineers took third place in the six team field at Roger Williams, who took over the hosting duties due to icy conditions on the Charles River.

Nationally Ranked Sailing Team Prepares for Spring Season
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Championships in the fall, the MIT sailing team is gearing up for its spring season as one of the top 15 teams in the country. In Sailing World’s final college ranking of 2010, the Engineers were named the 13th best sailing team, while the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association’s college race rankings have MIT at 15th overall. The former is based on an open coach’s poll, while the latter takes into account race results and a panel of rankers.

DAPER Staff Spreads Holiday Cheer
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics (DAPER) participated in a holiday toy drive this past week, organized by MIT sailing coach, Matt Lindblad. Members of the DAPER staff volunteered to sponsor Cambridge area children and helped make their holiday a little bit merrier. In all, MIT was able to sponsor 32 local children, the most in the four years Linblad has organized the drive.

MIT Sailing Closes Season with Championship Appearance
Annapolis, Md. – The MIT co-ed sailing team ended a very successful fall season this past weekend by placing 13th at the 2010 Atlantic Coast dinghy championships, hosted by the Naval Academy. The Engineers were one of 18 teams from up and down the East Coast who had qualified for the championship weekend thanks to previous finishes, including a seventh place finish at last month’s Erwin Schell Trophy.

Sailing Takes Third at Prof. Noringer Regatta
Cambridge, Mass. – The Engineer’s sailing team raced two boats in this past weekend’s Professor Noringer Bowl, hosted by Tech on the waters of the Charles River. MIT saw both of their boats finish in the top ten of the 15 team field, with a third place finish and a ninth place showing.

Co-Ed Sailing Qualifies for ACC Championships at Navy
New London, Conn. – The MIT co-ed sailing team has qualified for the ACC Championships thanks to a seventh place finish at the 70th Erwin Schell Trophy this past weekend. The top eight finishers at the event received an automatic spot in the Championships, to be raced the weekend of November 13-14 at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Sailing Wins Oberg Trophy as Top Greater Boston School
Cambridge, Mass. – The MIT Engineers sailing team emerged with the Oberg Trophy this past weekend as they hosted the regatta on the Charles River. Although the Brown Bears and Dartmouth Big Green topped the Engineers in points, MIT was the best placing Greater Boston School at the event, and brought home the hardware from the 18-team regatta.

Seven Local Colleges Participate in Final Midweek Tech Regatta
Cambridge, Mass. -- The Boston University freshman duo of Ian Towill and Phoebe Gittleson eeked out a hard fought victory in the last mid week tech regatta of 2010, hosted Wednesday by MIT on the Charles River. In addition to BU and the Engineers, students from Tufts, Harvard, Northeastern, Wellesley and Babson were in attendance at the stress-free regatta.

Sailing Takes Seventh at Navy Fall Intersectional Regatta
Cambridge, Mass. – Junior Philip Crain led the MIT sailing team to a seventh place finish this weekend at an intersectional regatta of twenty squads, hosted by the Navy Midshipmen. Crain sailed his boat to a third place finish in the final of four divisions. He placed in the top six in 16 of the 20 heats raced over the two-day regatta, including crossing the finish line first in four of the rounds.

Sailing Nabs 5th Place Finish at Rhode Island, Send Two Men to New Englands
Cambridge, Mass. – The MIT co-ed sailing team grabbed a fifth place finish this past weekend at the 2010 Moody Trophy hosted by the University of Rhode Island. The Engineers used 13 top ten finishes to finish fifth out of the eighteen schools that competed.

Engineers Take 12th at Smith Trophy, Send Two to Singlehanded Championships
Cambridge, Mass. – MIT got back to back heat victories from Tevis Nichols and Grace Young to propel them to a 12th place finish at the Smith Trophy, hosted by the Engineers on the Charles River. Nichols and Young raced in the B Division of the 26-boat regatta and were victorious in the fourth and fifth heats. They had already grabbed a third place finish in the first race of the day and also took fourth in the tenth of twelve races.

Twenty Teams Come to Cambridge for Midweek Technical Regatta
Cambridge, Mass. – Six Boston-area schools were represented at this Thursday’s midweek regatta, hosted by the sailing team at MIT. The Engineers had four squads compete and the best finish was by junior Tevis Nichols and freshman Emma Benjaminson who grabbed sixth place.

Cambridge, Mass. – The MIT sailing team took a strong second place finish at the Commonwealth Series regatta on the Charles River this weekend. MIT fell by just two points to the regatta winners Salve Regina.

Engineers Take First and Third at Midweek Tech Invite
Cambridge, Mass. – Freshman Hanna Vincent and junior Hannah Sparkman propelled the Engineers sailing team to a victory at the Midweek Tech Invite, a fun and educational race hosted by MIT on Tuesday afternoon. The pair raced to a sixteen point total and edged the second place boat by a single point for the overall victory.

Engineers Place 10th at Nevins Trophy, Honor Hatch Brown with Regatta
Kings Point, N.Y. – The MIT Engineers sailing team grabbed 10th place out of 20 schools at the Nevins Trophy intersectional regatta this weekend. The regatta consisted of three divisions, and the MIT boats had top-three finishes in each one, en route to a final score of 196. Junior Eamon Glackin skippered the B-Division boats to sixth place, with the help of crew Kelden Pehr and Reguli Granger. Together the Engineers secured race finishes of first and second place David Alfonso captained the solo C-division boats to a victory in his final heat to clinch 11th place for his division.

MIT Ranks Fourth Among All NCAA Institutions in 2010 NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings
CHICAGO, Ill. – The National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) recently announced its eighth annual Collegiate Power Rankings. Following another tremendous year, the Engineers were listed fourth overall in securing their highest ranking in the history of the report. The NCSA Athletic Recruiting’s Collegiate Power Rankings assess the academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country. The Power Rankings were developed to help prospective student athletes and their families evaluate the particular strengths of the top colleges and universities at the Division I, II and III levels.

Engineers Host Toni Deutsch Regatta, Take Eighth at Harvard
Cambridge, Mass. -- The MIT sailing team kicked off their 2010 season by competing in four events this past weekend, including hosting the Toni Deutsch Regatta. The Engineers placed 11th of 14 teams in the regatta, held on the Charles River. MIT skipper Jillian Reddy and crew Reguli Granger sailed to seventh position in the B Division, including a victory in the seventh heat.
