No. 18 MIT Sailing Competes in First Midweek Firefly Regatta
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Hosting its first Midweek Firefly Regatta of the spring season, the nationally-ranked No. 18 MIT sailing team captured third, 11th, 12th, and 13th place in a field of 13 entries. Tufts University clinched the top two spots while the team of freshmen Zack Drach (Wilmington, N.C.) and Christina Wettersten (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed third. The duo ranked third in the sixth round, fourth in the first race, and fifth in the second and fifth rotations.
Freshmen Bruno Faviero (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Sara Falcone (Anchorage, Alaska) collaborated for an 11th place finish as they claimed fifth, ninth, and 10th place. Fellow classmates Matthew Vernacchia (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Brian Belding (Woodstown, N.J.) came in next with five top-10 placements in six rounds. The pair finished eighth and 10th on two occasions while grabbing ninth place in the fifth round. Junior Maria Chan and sophomore Sarah Mountjoy (Melbourne, Australia) rounded out the Engineers by ranking 13th after securing sixth and eighth place in the sixth and fifth races.
MIT returns to the water this weekend for the Women's Emily Wick Trophy, New England Dinghy Championship, and Oberg Trophy.
