CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 18 coed sailing team kicked off its postseason push with a ninth-place finish at the New England Dinghy Championship held this past weekend. The Engineers also finished 12th at the Oberg Trophy while the women's squad was 13th at the Emily Wick Trophy.
Junior skipper Andrew Sommer (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior crew Steph Tong (Hong Kong) were the runner-ups in the A Division as they had seven top-five placements in 18 rounds. The duo won the ninth round, was second in the fourth, 11th, and 13th races, and claimed third in the third, 16th, and 18th rotations. In the B Division, senior Eamon Glackin (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Kelden Pehr (Seabrook, Texas) teamed up for an 11th-place ranking courtesy of a trio of second-place performances, one third-place outing, and two fourth-place finishes.
At the Oberg Trophy, senior Tevis Nichols (Skylonder, Calif.) and sophomore Angelique Nehmzow (Hong Kong) finished 11th in the A Division. The twosome secured eight top-10 finishes in 12 rounds, highlighted by second place in the second rotation and seventh place in the seventh and 11th races. Sophomore Billy Thalheimer (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Brian Belding (Woodstown, N.J.) clinched fifth place in two rounds helping them rank 13th in the B Division.
The A Division squad of senior Katii Gullick (Portland, Maine), sophomore Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.) and junior Soraya Shehata (Bethesda, Md.) captured 12th place at the Emily Wick Trophy. In 17 rounds, the trio cracked the top 10 on nine occasions including one third-place and two fifth-place rankings. Freshman Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.) and sophomore Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led a crew comprised of senior Jacqueline Soegaard (San Juan, Puerto Rico), junior Taylor Burfield (Naples, Fla.), and sophomore Keren Gu (Bowie, Md.) to 15th place in the B Division. The Engineers posted seven top-10 finishes including a third-place ranking in the 10th race and fourth-place outings in the second and eighth rounds.
Next up for MIT will be the Women's New England Championship, the Thompson Trophy, and the Wellesley/Babson Invitational.
