CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT sailing team provided six of the seven entries in its Midweek Fly Invite held on Wednesday afternoon. The nationally-ranked No. 13 Engineers secured second through seventh place while racing in a fleet of the New Collegiate Fireflies.
Freshmen Cali Warner (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Aleksandra Kalinowska captured the highest finish for the Cardinal and Gray as they were second in the opening race, first in the next outing, fourth in the third round, and seventh in the last rotation. Freshman Marina Crowe (Swarthmore, Pa.) and sophomore Sara Falcone (Anchorage, Alaska) opened the day with a fourth-place performance, secured second and third place in the following races, and then completed the regatta with a fifth-place effort.
Sophomore David Perez (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and freshman Noam Buckman (Atlanta, Ga.) won the first and last races in addition to placing seventh in two outings en route to an overall ranking of fourth. Sophomore Matthew Vernacchia (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Pedro Brito recorded back-to-back fifth-place performances, followed by a runner-up effort and then fourth place in the final rotation.
Freshmen Beckett Colson (Weston, Mass.) and Scarlett Koller a pair of sixth-place finishes sandwiched a victory in the third round and fourth place in the second race. Junior Sarah Mountjoy (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Jamila Smith-Dell (Medford, Mass.) opened the day in seventh place, recorded sixth-place finishes in the next two rounds before jumping up to third in the finale.
This weekend MIT will participate in the Hoyt Trophy at Brown, the Oberg Trophy at Boston University, and the Stu Nelson Trophy at Connecticut College.
