MIT Competes at Sharpe Trophy and Women’s Interconference Regatta
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 13 MIT coed sailing team kicked off the spring season this past weekend by capturing third place at the Sharpe Trophy while the No. 11 women's squad finished in seventh place at the Women's Interconference Regatta.
The Engineers compiled a ledger of 8-5 at the Sharpe Trophy team race as No. 6 Brown University took top honors with a total of 11-2, followed by a 10-3 performance from No. 3 Yale University. Seniors Andrew Sommer (Duxbury, Mass.), Philip Crain (Houston, Texas), and David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico) served as the skippers while fellow classmates Kelden Pehr (Seabrook, Texas), Steven Drapcho (Newtown, Pa.), and Eben Freeman (Zurich Switzerland) comprised the crews.
Junior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and senior Taylor Burfield (Naples, Fla.) collaborated for a sixth-place finish in the B Division of the Women's Interconference Regatta. The duo entered the top 10 on four occasions, including a runner-up performance in the sixth round and fifth place in the third outing. Sophomores Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.) and Laura Dunphy (Shelburne, Vt.) along with junior Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.) claimed eighth place in the A Division. The trio cracked the top 10 in eight of 18 rounds, highlighted by a victory in the third rotation, third place in the final outing of the regatta, and fourth place in the 12th round.
Next up for MIT will be the Women's Intersectional hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on March 9-10.
