Sailing Announces Class of 2017

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT sailing team will welcome seven new members for the 2013-14 season, co-head coach Matt Lindblad announced. Included in the Class of 2017 are multi-sport student-athletes from four states and the U.S. Virgin Islands who have recorded outstanding performances on the national stage.

"The sailors on the team are excited to welcome this incoming class," said Lindblad. "This is an excellent recruiting class with many multi-sport athletes who have excelled in the classroom. These student-athletes have much to offer to the sailing team and the MIT community and we think they are a great fit here at MIT."

Oliver Dodd (Needham, Mass./Needham)
Recipient of Award of Academic Achievement...will be majoring in biology.

Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles School)
Crew...2011 and 2013 Interscholastic Sailing Association Mallory Fleet Race champion...also competed on the tennis and squash teams...valedictorian...National Honor Society vice-president...class president and also served as the class vice-president...will be majoring in materials science.

Jorlyn Le Garrec (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice)
Captain of the volleyball, swimming, and ultimate frisbee teams...named all-city as a setter for the volleyball team...competed in the 100m and 200m at the swimming city championship...valedictorian...National Honor Society...will be majoring in engineering.

Marisa Nienberg (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla)
Skipper...captain...also competed on the varsity golf team...president of the Cum Laude Society...will be majoring in brain and cognitive sciences.

Nicole O'Brien (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop)
Skipper...captain...two-time team MVP skipper...three-time varsity letterwinner...also sailed for Cottage Park Yacht Club...earned two varsity letters for both soccer and track and field...recipient of the 2013 Scholar-Athlete Award...played club soccer with F.C. Boston Azzurri...salutatorian...National Honor Society...2012 AP Scholar with Honor...High Honor Roll...major is undecided.

Paige Omura (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School)
Crew...earned varsity letters for cross country, soccer, basketball, and track and field...was the captain of the cross country and basketball teams...ILH first team all-star Division 1-A for basketball as a junior...soccer team captured the HHSAA championship her senior year...played on the Honolulu Bulls club soccer team...valedictorian...Cum Laude Society...class secretary as a junior and senior...was on the Headmaster's List all four years...NCTE Writing Competition participant...major is undecided.

Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury)
Skipper...captain...was also the captain of the cross country and indoor track and field teams...competed in the mile, 4x400 relay, and 1,000m for indoor track...earned nine varsity letters...National Honor Society...major is undecided.
