No. 15 Coed Sailing Finishes Second at Smith Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Behind the strength of 10 top-10 performances at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship this past weekend, MIT sophomore Robyn Lesh (Everson, Wash.) secured sixth place and edged out senior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) by one point for the final spot at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship. Lesh will make her national debut for the No. 11 women's sailing team in Newport, R.I. at the three-day competition beginning on Friday, Nov. 8.

In other action, the No. 15 coed squad was the runner-up at the Smith Trophy, captured fifth place out of 13 squads at the Harvard Invitational, and finished 16th at the Danmark Trophy.

Lesh registered seventh-place rankings in four rounds, was fifth on two occasions, claimed the second spot in the fourth race, and was third in the 10th outing. Vincent had a pair of fourth and eighth-place finishes, was sixth in the seventh round, seventh in the ninth rotation, and generated fifth-place performances in the last three races to finish seventh out of 14 competitors.

At the Smith Trophy, MIT secured third place in both the A and B Divisions. Freshmen Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.) and Paige Omura (Honolulu, Hawaii) won two races, finished second in the final round, and were third in the second rotation. Junior Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.) and sophomore Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan (Temple, N.H.) collaborated for two victories in the B Division to go along with a pair of sixth-place performances.

Sophomores Cali Warner (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jamila Smith-Dell (Cambridge, Mass.) finished fourth out of 13 teams in the A Division of the Harvard Invitational. The duo was the runner-up in the fifth race, claimed fourth place in two outings, and was fifth in the opening round. In the B Division, juniors Andrew Stratton (Oulston, United Kingdom) and Christina Wettersten (Palo Alto, Calif.) finished sixth courtesy of two fourth-place and sixth-place rankings in addition to a fifth-place performance in the last rotation.

Sophomore David Larson (La Jolla, Calif.), senior Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.), freshman Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), and junior Samantha Albright (Madison, Conn.) ranked 15th in the B Division of the Danmark Trophy. The contingent was seventh in the second and third rounds, captured 10th place in the eighth rotation, and finished 11th in the fourth race. Senior David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was joined by junior Kayla Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) and Xu in the A Division where they finished in 17th place. The trio claimed third in the opening race, which was followed by placements of ninth, 10th, and 11th in the fourth, third, and sixth rounds, respectively.

Coming up this weekend for MIT will be its own Sir Ian McFarlane Alumni Regatta in addition to the Moody Trophy, New England Match Race Championship, and the Navy Women's Fall Intersectional.
