No. 17 MIT Secures Runner-up Spot at Firefly and FJ Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 17 MIT coed sailing team captured second place among 17 teams at the Firefly and FJ Invitational on Saturday. In addition, the Engineers finished 12th of out 20 squads at the Navy Fall Intersectional.

Sophomores Christopher Ford (Millbrae, Calif.) and Victoria Stivanello (Douglaston, N.Y.) won the A Division of the Firefly and FJ Invitational behind the strength of four victories and four runner-up finishes in 11 rounds. In the B Division, freshman Nicole O'Brien (Winthrop, Mass.) and sophomore Alissa Borshchenko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) claimed fifth place as their 11 top-10 placements were highlighted by opening the regatta with a second-place performance, coming in third in the third rotation, and registering a pair of fourth-place finishes.

At the Navy Fall Intersectional, seniors David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.) along with juniors Kayla Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) and Samantha Albright (Madison, Conn.) collaborated for a seventh-place finish in the A Division. The quartet entered the top five on six occasions as they won two rounds, was the runner-up in the fourth race, claimed fourth place in the seventh outing, and recorded a pair of fifth-place performances. Sophomore David Larson (La Jolla, Calif.) was joined by Xu and freshman Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) where they placed ninth in the B Division courtesy of 10 top-10 entries. The trio finished second in the second round, ranked third in the 14th race, captured fifth place two times, and produced three sixth-place finishes.

In the D Division, senior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was 15th as she was fifth in the eighth round, captured seventh and ninth place in two rotations, and was 10th in the 19th race. Also competing as an individual, sophomore Joe Paggi (Bayville, N.J.) ranked 16th in the C Division by claiming two ninth-place spots and tallying a trio of 10th-place finishes.

Next up for MIT will be its own Midweek Firefly Invite on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
