Hanna Vincent Finishes 10th at Women’s Singlehanded National Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – As only the second MIT women's sailor to qualify for the ICSA /Laser Performance Women's Singlehanded National Championship, senior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) claimed 10th place this past weekend. In addition, the No. 19 coed squad won the Mike Horn Trophy, finished fourth and ninth at the Crews Regatta, and ranked ninth at the Professor Noringer Regatta.

Vincent was joined by four Division III competitors in the top 10 as she produced nine top-10 performances in 18 rounds. She captured fourth place in the 16th race, was sixth on two occasions, finished seventh in the opening rotation, and tacked on a pair of eighth-place rankings.

Junior Laura Dunphy (Shelburne, Vt.), sophomores Joe Paggi (Bayville, N.J.) and Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan (Temple, N.H.), along with freshmen Jorlyn Le Garrec (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Paige Omura (Honolulu, Hawaii), and Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.) powered the Engineers to their victory at the Mike Horn Trophy with a ledger of 13-2. The contingent generated 5-0 marks in the first and third rounds by defeating Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, Roger Williams University, and Tufts University. In the second round, the Cardinal and Gray topped BU, Harvard, and Roger Williams.

Freshman Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and junior Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.) took top honors in the A Division of the Crews Regatta with victories in three of the six races that were held. In the B Division, Omura and Le Garrec ranked fifth as they were the runner-up in the second race, fourth in the last outing, and fifth in the third rotation. MIT's ninth-place contingent was comprised of sophomores Alissa Borshchenko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jamila Smith-Dell (Cambridge, Mass.), senior Grace Young (Washington, D.C.), and freshman David Zhang (Boyds, Md.). Borshchenko and Smith-Dell generated a trio of seventh-place performances in addition to a pair of eighth-place finishes to rank seventh in the A Division. Highlights for Young and Zhang included placements of seventh, eighth, and ninth as they were 10th in the B Division.

Borshchenko and Smith-Dell were joined by freshmen Moseley Andrews (Ross, Calif.) and Wei Low (Woodbridge, Va.) at the Professor Noringer Regatta. In the A Division, Borshchenko and Smith-Dell captured seventh place after taking third in the opening round, fifth in the next outing, and seventh in the final rotation. Andrews and Low were ninth in the B Division as they took the seventh, eighth, and ninth spots in the second, fourth, and fifth races.

Next up for the Cardinal and Gray will be the Dark of Night Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 14 followed by its season-finales at the Atlantic Coast Championships for both the coed and women's teams on November 16-17.
