Engineers Finish Third at Geiger Team Race Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT sailing team, currently No. 14 in the team race national rankings, captured third place out of seven entries at the Ike Geiger Team Race Trophy on Saturday. No. 11 Tufts University took top honors followed by Bowdoin College. The skippers for the Engineers were senior David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico), freshman Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.), and sophomores Joe Paggi (Bayville, N.J.) and David Larson (La Jolla, Calif.) while the crews consisted of senior Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.), freshmen Paige Omura (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), and sophomore Christopher Ford (Millbrae, Calif.).

In the opening round, MIT defeated Bowdoin, Northeastern University, No. 8 Roger Williams University, and Tufts but fell to No. 13 Dartmouth College and the University of Rhode Island for a ledger of 4-2. In the next outing, the Engineers turned in a 3-3 performance as they picked up wins over Dartmouth, Northeastern, and URI. The Cardinal and Gray closed out the day with a loss to Bowdoin but bounced back with victories against Tufts and Roger Williams for a final tally of 9-6.

Next weekend, MIT will be competing at the Women's Interconference Regatta at the College of Charleston, the Friis Trophy Team Race at Tufts, the Staake Trophy Team Race at Bowdoin, as well as the Central Series 2 and Coed Invitational with both being co-hosted by Boston University and Northeastern.
