NEW LONDON, Conn. – In its final competition of the season, the nationally-ranked No. 14 MIT coed sailing team claimed 13th place out of 18 squads at the New England Dinghy Championship this past weekend. The Engineers saw their A Division boat of seniors David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.) capture 10th place while the B Division trio of freshmen Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.), Paige Omura (Honolulu, Hawaii), and Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) was 15th.
Alfonso and Xu entered the top 10 in seven of the 14 rounds that were held. They won the seventh race, were the runners-up in the penultimate outing, ranked third and eighth on two occasions, and secured the 10th spot in the 10th rotation. Highlights for rookies Stewart, Omura, and Ladd were a victory in the third round, a second-place performance in the opening race, and fourth-place finishes in the sixth and 14th rotations.
