Sailors Get Out Of The Woods Finishing 11th
March 9, 2008
NEWPORT, R.I. - With winds swirling from the west at up to 25 knots, the MIT co-ed sailing team improved two slots from its first day's finish, closing in 11th-place out of 18 teams at the Wood Trophy hosted by Salve Regina University this past weekend.
While the A-team of skippers Gabe Cira and Libby Palmer and crews Rachel Licht and Ashley Cantieny strongly closed in ninth place after ranking the same on Saturday, the `B' squad improved by three slots from the first to the second day. After ending Saturday in 16th place, the lower circuit of skippers Charlie Field and Sebastian Sovero and crews Vicki Lee and Leigh Casadaban rallied to finish 13th in its group, allowing Tech to move up two slots from Saturday's overall 13th place mark.
Cira, Palmer, Licht, and Cantieny ranked fifth in the first two rounds, then stayed consistent the rest of the way with four ninth-place slots. The quartet finished worse than 10th only twice.
While the `B' team only fared average on Sunday, it was enough to improve overall on the first day's low rankings.
Tufts University won the event with a score of 62.
MIT also placed ninth out of 10 teams at the St. Mary's Team Racing in St. Mary's, Maryland this past weekend. St. Mary's won the event with a 20-1 record.
