Engineers Place Admirable Seventh to Start Spring Campaign

March 12, 2006

BRONX, N.Y. - Back in action for the first time since November, the MIT sailors finished a strong seventh out of 18 teams, this past weekend, at the Admiral Moore Regatta. Tech's reliable A-Division tandem of skipper Jack Field and crew Wyman Li placed a solid sixth, while B-Division's Jake Muhleman and Julie Arsenault finished ninth during the two-day event hosted by New York Maritime College.

Racing in light winds Sunday at 0-5 knots south, Field and Li saved their best for last, placing third in the final race. The duo recovered from a ninth place finish in the next-to-last joust after sailing with ease in Saturday's similar breeze from the west. In the regatta's first-day rounds, Field and Li slotted fifth, fourth, eighth, and seventh, giving MIT leverage heading into Sunday's final two contests.

Muhleman and Arsenault followed suit with remarkable third- and second-place rankings to highlight Saturday's three B-Division tilts. Though they took a dip on Sunday, the pair still managed an eighth place mark in the fourth race.

The Engineers finished one slot below New England rival Brown University, which finished sixth, while cross-town foe Tufts University won the event with a score of 52.

MIT will host the Marchiando Trophy Team Race and the Women's Emily Wick Trophy on Sunday, March 26.
