NEW LONDON, Conn. - MIT finished fifth overall in the Thompson Trophy this past weekend, the last fleet format regatta before the postseason run. The great effort should give the Engineers a boost as the team prepared for New England's and Nationals against some of the best sailors in the country.

A total of 17 races were sailed over the two-day stretch, with captain JM Modisette pacing Tech's fourth-place finish in A division. Modisette skippered every race, scoring 114 points backed by crews Cha-ling O'Connell, Brett Boshco, and Wyman Li.

The Trojans of USC won the regatta, outpacing Yale University by a 16-point margin. Hobart/William Smith College closed in third, while the Harvard Crimson edged out the Engineers for fourth.

The Cardinal and Gray did score a plethora of impressive wins, sailing past South Florida, Georgetown, Brown and Navy en route to the strong finish. In total, Tech dropped eight Division I opponents.

MIT hosts the annual race for the Geiger Trophy, Saturday, April 30, along the Charles River in Cambridge.
