Engineers place 11th at Harry Anderson Trophy

Sept. 15, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Keeping with the consistency that that has made it a notable force in recent years, the MIT sailing team opened the season with a respectable 11th-place finish out of 20 teams at the Harry Anderson Trophy hosted by Yale University this past weekend. A-Division skipper Brooks Reed and crew Ellie Hass finished a strong eighth in their circuit, after both standouts were named to the 2008 All New England coed sailing team in May.

It was the first go-round for the Engineers since their star ‘A’ team of skipper Jack Field and crew Julie Arsenault graduated in the spring.

Racing in mostly light southerly breezes throughout the two-day event, Reed and Hass placed second in the opening tilt, then slotted seventh in the last two of the total five rounds. The duo also ranked 11th in the second joust, while its 15th-place mark in the third race proved to be its only blemish during the entire affair.

The ‘B’ team led by skipper Josh Leighton and crew Vicki Lee finished in 12th place, with their best marks – eighth and ninth – coming in the first and fourth rounds, respectively.

Roger Williams University won the event with a score of 55. Boston College finished second, while Yale, Tuft University, and Brown University closed out the top five.

The Cardinal and Gray also finished sixth out of 16 teams at the Women’s Man-Labs Trophy hosted by MIT on Saturday. A-Division skipper Libby Palmer and crew Lisa Schlecht finished second their circuit.

MIT will host the Hatch Brown Trophy next weekend.
