Red-Hot Engineers Ride Into Sixth at Rhode Island State Championship
Nov. 6, 2006
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A-Division skipper Jack Field and crew Julie Arsenault ranked second in their circuit as MIT finished sixth overall out of 16 entries at the Rhode Island State Championship this past weekend. In addition to the strong finish, the Cardinal and Gray continued to hold its strong placement (13th) in the Sailing World national rankings last week.
Fading winds halted the races after A-Division sailed one round on Saturday. While the breeze never peaked above five knots on Sunday, the teams managed to squeeze in seven tilts among groups "A" and "B" on Narragansett Bay.
After Field and Arsenault settled for an eighth-place finish in Saturday's first round, the duo placed fourth, first, and third on the second day. Their total of 16 points ranked second only to Tufts University (9), which finished second overall. Boston University won the event, while host Salve Regina University landed third.
The Engineers finished 11th in B-Division, though they scored a solid sixth-place mark in the final joust.
MIT will take its solid national ranking to the Atlantic Coast Championship next weekend in Providence.
