Engineers Down Vermont at The Maine Event
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT squash traveled north for the annual Maine Event tournament, a round-robin of matches hosted by Bates College, Bowdoin College and Colby College. The Engineers picked up a win over the University of Vermont, 9-0, lost a close match to Drexel University, 6-3, and dropped a pair of 9-0 decisions to Bates and Bowdoin.
The Cardinal and Gray did not drop a single set against Vermont, winning all nine of its matches in 3-0 sweeps. Sophomore West Hubbard (Greenwich, Conn.) surrendered just eight points in his match against Andrew Bailey at the top spot, winning 11-3, 11-2, 11-3. Freshman Peter Riley was even more impressive, earning an 11-0, 11-3, 11-1 decision at the No. 4 position.
The most tightly contested match of the weekend came against Drexel. Although Tech lost 6-3, a number of matches were extended to four and five sets and easily could have gone the Engineers' way. Riley picked up his second win of the weekend, with a 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6 defeat of Harshil Dokania. Freshman David Bian (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Abhi Mitra (Medford, Mass.) also won their matches at No. 5 and 6, respectively.
Senior Austin Anderson (Newtown Square, Pa.) took his opponent at No. 2 to five sets before falling, 12-14, 3-11, 11-0, 11-1, 11-4. Freshman Steve Cho (Lexington, Mass.) won his first set 15-13 before dropping the next three, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6.
Co-hosts Bates and Bowdoin proved to be too much for the Cardinal and Gray, as both squads picked up 9-0 wins. Sophomore Viveka Mishra (Washington, D.C.) won her first set in the No. 9 position against Bates before losing in four.
MIT will return to the Zesiger Center courts next weekend, hosting a pair of local foes, in Boston University and Boston College on Saturday, February 4. Tech faces BU at 11:00 a.m. and will square off against Boston College at 1:00 p.m.
