MIT Squash Completes Final Day of MIT & Wellesley Invite
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - At the MIT & Wellesley Invite, the first tournament of the 2012 season, the MIT squash team came away with a record of 1-4 for the weekend, after winning against the University of Vermont (9-0) and dropping decisions against Colby College (9-0), Middlebury College (9-0) and Brown University (9-0). The Engineers are now 1-4 for the season.
MIT did not drop a single game against Vermont, winning all but one of its matches in 3-0 sweeps. Senior Sunny Long (Wethersfield, Conn.) had an impressive start to his weekend, winning 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 against Audrey Stout. Freshman Frances Rucker also had a good first game, earning an 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 decision against Devon Winter.
Colby proved to be a tough opponent that eventually gained the upper hand, but not without a fight. Sophomore David Bian (Austin, Texas) lost to Trey Simpson 11-5, 11-10, 11-6, getting dangerously close in the second game but not quite close enough. Long won one of his games against Pete Gabranski, 11-7, but fell in the other three. Sophomore Gray Riley (Wellesley, Mass.) came closest of all to beating his opponent, tying 11-11 in the first game but falling 11-8, 11-7 in the final two.
Against Middlebury, junior Abhi Mitra (Medford, Mass.) had a good second game, narrowly losing, 11-9, to Andrew Jung. The other two ended up 11-1, 11-2 in Jung's favor. Gray was the only one of the Engineers to win one game against his opponent (11-4), but ended up falling in the others, 11-6 11-4, 11-3.
Freshman Bowen Baker (Nevada City, Calif.) kept up with his Brown opponent in his first two games, narrowly losing 11-9, 11-5 and then losing 11-2 in the final game. Riley had another strong match, falling 11-8, 11-3, 11-8, but keeping his opponent on his toes the entire time.
MIT will return to the courts from Nov. 30- Dec. 2 when they host part of the Boston Round Robin, facing Harvard University, Bates College, Navy, UC Berkeley, Navy and Bard College.
