MIT Squash Falls to Amherst, 9-0
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT squash team wrapped up the Boston Round Robin on Sunday afternoon with a record of 2-2 after losses against Bates (9-0), Navy (9-0) and wins over UC Berkeley (9-0) and Bard (9-0). The Engineers now have a record of 3-8 for the season.
Against Bates, freshman Bowen Baker (Nevada City, Calif.) played well, narrowly dropping the first and third games 11-9, 11-9, while losing the second game, 11-2. Fellow freshman Gray Riley (Wellesley, Mass.) fell 11-6, 11-8 in the first two and 12-10 in a fast-paced final game.
Junior Sunny Long (Wethersfield, Conn.) fought hard against Navy's Bill Kacergis, but ultimately fell 11-9, 11-8, 11-3. Sophomore Sung Won Cho (Lexington, Mass.) played better as the match continued, losing to Andrew McGuinness 11-3, 11-7, 11-5.
In the win against UC Berkeley, freshman Marina Crowe (Swarthmore, Pa.) had a convincing win over Giovanni Zanati, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4. Sophomore David Bian (Austin, Texas) won the first game 15-13 but lost the second game, 11-8. He played well to come back from the loss to win the last two games 11-2, 11-6.
In the final match of the weekend against Bard, senior Connor Kirschbaum (Suffield, Conn.) and freshman Woo Hyeok Kang both had impressive wins over their opponents. Kirschbaum won all three games 11-3, 11-0, 11-2, while Kang was also victorious with an 11-2, 11-2, 11-3 decision.
MIT will return to action on Dec. 8 when it hosts Amherst College at 11:00 a.m.
