MIT Squash Topped by Bowdoin and Tufts

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The MIT squash team traveled to Bowdoin College for the first away match of the 2013 portion of the season. The No. 33 Engineers battled the No. 19 Polar Bears, but ultimately fell, 9-0. Later on that day against Tufts, MIT were defeated by the No. 30 Jumbos, 6-3, after a handful of well-played matches. Tech's ledger now stands at 3-12 for the season.

In the top spot against Bowdoin, sophomore David Bian (Austin, Texas) improved as the games went on. He lost his first game to Andrew Hilboldt, 11-1, but got closer to catching up in the final two games, falling 11-5, 11-5.

Senior Sunny Long (Wethersfield, Conn.) had a strong first game, narrowly losing to Max Bearse, 11-7. He lost the other two games, 11-3, 11-3. It seemed as if sophomore Gray Riley (Wellesley, Mass.) was close to making a comeback, barely falling to William Fantini in the second game, 11-9. He lost the first and third games, 11-6, 11-4.

Against Tufts, sophomore Sung Won Cho (Lexington, Mass.) was able to win the second game, 11-4, but dropped the other three 11-4, 11-9, 11-6, to opponent Jeremy Ho. In the five-game thriller against Hugo Meggit, Riley lost the second and fourth games, 13-11, 11-4, but won the other three games, 11-3, 11-9, 11-9. Senior Connor Kirschbaum (Suffield, Conn.) had a relatively easy match against Phil Weiner, winning all three games, 11-1, 11-2, 11-6.

MIT will return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host Boston College and Boston University. The next day, they will travel to Harvard University.
