MIT Falls to Conn. College at Home-Opening Match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - At its first home match of the season, the MIT squash team fell to Connecticut College by a score of 7-2. Tech is now 3-1 on the season, after winning against Boston University, Northeastern University and  Boston College on the opening weekend of competition. Freshman Tyler Finkelstein (Greenwich, Conn.) won at No. 2 and junior David Bian (Austin, Texas) was victorious at No. 4.

Playing at the top spot for the first time this season, freshman Nikhil Punwaney (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) put up a fight against opponent John Sluder  in a very close match, but ultimately fell in five games. He won the second and third games, 11-9, 11-2, but fell in the first, fourth and fifth, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8. Finkelstein prevailed over Sam Gevirtz at No. 2, winning the first two games, 11-5, 11-8, falling in the third, 11-8, before coming back to win the fourth, 11-4.

Bian defeated Ben Thayer in a four-game thriller, winning the first narrowly by a score of 11-9, falling in the second, 12-10, and winning the final two games, 11-8, 11-7. Junior Gray Riley (Wellesley, Mass.) fell in a very close, aggressive match to Hunter Bolling at No. 5, just barely losing the first game, 15-13, and dropping the other two, 11-7, 11-8.

MIT has a busy week ahead of it, playing four home matches in the span of four days. On Wednesday, Nov. 20, MIT will face Tufts University, in a match set to start at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Engineers will play against Bowdoin College at 2:00 p.m. before battling Wesleyan University at 7:30 p.m. Tech will end the week the following day with a 6:00 p.m. match against Colby College.
