Squash Salvages One Of Two At Yale Round Robin

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The squash team (1-5) finally found the win column last Saturday. MIT began the weekend losing to 13th nationally ranked Navy but then edged Penn State five matches to four.
Despite some very competitive squash played by Captain Nadeem Mazen (lost 10-8, 9-7, 10-9) and freshman Justin Stilwell (lost 9-6, 10-8, 9-7), the Engineers were unable to steal a single game from Navy.
"Navy is a good, experienced and well-conditioned team" said head coach Jim Taylor. "We were in a few matches. I was very pleased with the technical improvement from everyone on the team."
The recent improvement showed in the second match with Penn State. When the game finally started, Mazen, Stilwell, senior Chris Buenrostro, junior Jehan DeFonseka and freshman Saad Zahir all came out playing their best. They lost only two games total in five matches. Three of MIT's four losses went the full five games. Junior
Ashwin Deshpande won more points than his opponent but still suffered the loss. Junior Duncan Ma, who had recently returned from Hong Kong, fell in five games but played well. Most impressive was sophomore David Baumgartner, who threw everything he had at the ball and almost eked out a win.
"I'm very pleased with the win," said Taylor. "I'm much more pleased by the cohesiveness the team displayed on and off the court."
The Engineers will look to build off of their first win of the season when they host Fordham University on Saturday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m.
