CENTERVILLE, Mass. – After completing one of the most successful regular seasons in the history of the program, the MIT baseball team will extend its season by taking part in the 2013 Division III New England Baseball Championship. Selected as the No. 3 seed in the tournament, the Engineers will begin play on Wednesday, May 8 against No. 6 seed Mitchell College at 3:00 p.m. on Briggs Field.
MIT (24-11) is just one win away from tying the school record for victories in a season of 25 reached in both 2011 and 2009. This is the third straight 20-win season and the fourth time over the last five years that MIT has reached 20 wins.
Seven teams make up the tournament, with No. 1 seed Suffolk University receiving a first round bye. In other first round contests on Wednesday No. 2 Castleton State College (28-13) will host No. 7 Elms College (19-19). On Thursday, No. 4 Husson University (26-17) plays No. 5 United States Coast Guard Academy (22-16) at 3:30 p.m. in New London, Conn.
The semifinals and finals, hosted by Suffolk, will be played on Briggs Field at MIT on May 11-12. On Saturday the winner of the Husson/Coast Guard game will face Suffolk University at 12 p.m. in one semifinal, with the winner of the Castleton State/Elms contest facing the winner of the MIT/Mitchell game at 3 p.m. in the other semifinal. The semifinal winners will meet Sunday, at 12 p.m. for the championship.
