BOSTON, Mass. – After finishing second in the in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball tournament last season, the MIT baseball team has been selected to finish second in the 2014 league standings in the preseason poll announced by the conference. Wheaton College was picked as the favorite to win the 2014 title, with Babson College following MIT as the third-place selection in the poll.
MIT reached the 20-win plateau for a third straight season in 2013, finishing with a 27-13 record to set a school record for wins in a season. The Engineers also won the ECAC New England Championship and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. MIT returns a pair of All-NEWMAC outfielders that will play key roles for the Engineers again this season in senior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah - .340, 3 HR, 28 RBI) and junior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif. - .358, 4 HR, 38 RBI). MIT also returns an all-conference pitcher to its starting rotation in senior Max Ockner (Chesterfield, Mo. - 5-3, 2.60 ERA).
MIT will open the 2014 season with a doubleheader at William Paterson University on March 1.
