After nine seasons as the head coach at MIT, Andy Barlow has elevated the program to one of the best in the NEWMAC. He has led the Engineers to a winning record eight times, reaching 20 wins five times, including a pair of 25-victory seasons. He was named the NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 2011 after guiding MIT to an NCAA Tournament berth and the NEWMAC Championship game.

With over 20 years of dugout experience, Barlow made the move to Cambridge from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he served for nine seasons as Vassar College’s Head Baseball Coach. During his time with the Brewers, Barlow saw the program improve every season, culminating in a school record 19-win season in 2002.

After initiating a feeder system in Maine through the development of a youth clinic, Barlow extended his professional repertoire in 1988 to include the college scene, when he assumed duties as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Maryland. In 1991, Barlow made the switch to Hamilton, N.Y., specializing in the training of the pitching staff at Colgate University. Barlow stayed with the Red Raiders until inheriting the Vassar program in 1995, opting for the head coaching tag of a team that was just three years removed from club status.

A 1985 graduate of the University of Vermont, Barlow’s breadth of experience also includes time spent coaching in some of the top collegiate summer leagues in the country. Barlow is a longtime member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and is also an active member of the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA).

Todd Carroll was named the MIT pitching coach in January of 2010.  No stranger to northeast baseball, he had previously been an assistant coach at UMass-Boston, Salem Community College and Harvard University. At UMass-Boston, Carroll helped the Beacons to their first winning record in school history in 2002. At Salem, both of Carroll’s pitching staffs finished the year with earned run averages under four and in 2007, Harvard’s pitching staff led the Ivy League by nearly a full run. In each of the past two seasons he has guided the MIT pitching staffs to top-25 finishes in the nation in ERA, posting marks of 3.11 (2012) and 2.97 (2011).

Carroll has also gained experience through summer baseball, coaching in three of the most prestigious leagues in the country. From 2002-2005 he was the pitching coach of the Mill City All Americans of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, working under current MIT assistant coach Chip Forrest. In 2007, Carroll served as an assistant coach with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League, and in 2008, he served as the Head Coach of the Bennington Bombers of the New York Collegiate League. Carroll has also spent a year as an associate scout with the Major League Baseball scouting bureau. A noted clinic instructor, Carroll has worked clinics at Boston College, Harvard and the University of Arizona, amongst others. Sixty three of Carroll’s former players have signed professional contracts.

Tony Deshler is in his first season on the coaching staff at MIT after a standout collegiate career at Brandeis University.

A 2011 graduate of Brandeis where he was a three-year starter and team captain as a senior, he spent last summer and fall playing in Sydney, Australia where he was named to the Sydney Major League All-Star team. He coached in Australia as well, serving as the head coach of the Under 18 Sydney Major League team. In the spring of 2012 he held the position of assistant coach at Groton Academy.
