Kates Named to Academic All-District Team

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) was honored for his academic and athletic achievements today with his selection to the 2012-13 Capitol One Academic All-District Men's Basketball team released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today. Kates was the only player from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) to be named to the honor.

Kates is MIT's leading scorer this season, averaging 16.5 points per game, ranking him third in the NEWMAC. MIT's all-time leader in assists and steals, he leads the NEWMAC in steals per game (2.7 spg) and is second in the league in assists per game (4.8 apg). Nationally Kates ranks 18th in steals per game and 34th in assists per game.

A preseason All-America selection, Kates was a fourth team All-American after his junior campaign when averaged 14.2 points, 5.4 assists and 2.3 steals to help lead MIT it its first ever NCAA Final Four appearance. A three-time All-NEWMAC selection, Kates carries a 3.52 (4.0 scale) GPA as an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science major at MIT.

Kates' name will now be placed on the ballot for the Academic All-America team, which will be voted on and announced later this month. MIT men's basketball has had seven different players in the past receive Academic All-America honors, including seniors Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Jamie Karraker (Morgantown, W.Va.) last year.
