Men’s Basketball Moves Up In National Rankings, Seeded Second for NEWMAC Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT's men's basketball team finished the season on a roll, with its season best eight-game win streak to end the regular season enough to move the Engineers up to 19th in the latest national poll release by this week. With the regular season completed, MIT will open defense of its 2012 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at the 2013 NEWMAC men's basketball tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) has led the way for MIT down the stretch, averaging 19.6 points and 12.9 rebounds per game during the Engineers' late season surge. Three of the last four NEWMAC Player of the Week awards have been awarded to Tashman, who has set career single-game highs of 28 points and 20 rebounds during his stretch.  Freshman Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) has also played well lately for MIT, shooting 48 percent from three-point range and averaging 11.1 points over the final eight games. Sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) is averaging nearly a double-double of 10.0 points and 9.4 rebounds during the streak, with senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) leading the squad in assists, steals and free throw shooting.

On Saturday at 3 p.m. MIT will take on No. 3 seed Springfield College in one semifinal of the NEWMAC Tournament, which is being hosted by No. 1 seed WPI in Harrington Auditorium. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the first semifinal between WPI and No. 5 seed Babson on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the NEWMAC title and automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
