Kates, Tashman Earn ECAC All-Star Recognition

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – A pair of MIT men's basketball seniors were recognized for their outstanding seasons today when the 2012-13 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Men's Basketball All-Star team was released by the organization. Seniors Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) were among six players from around the region selected to the first team. MIT and Amherst College were the only two schools with two players named as ECAC All-Stars.

Tashman, who was the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year and a first team all-conference selection, averaged a double-double this season with his 16.3 ppg and 10.8 rpg averages. A three-time NEMWAC Player of the Week, Tashman led the conference in rebounding while leading the Engineers in both scoring and rebounding. The MIT career leader in rebounds, Tashman became the first MIT player to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career this season. He finished among the top-10 all-time at MIT in points (1,414), rebounds (1,023), field goal percentage (.541), free throw percentage (.740), assists (270) and blocks (82).

Kates was also a first team All-NEWMAC selection this year and finished second to Tashman in scoring for the Engineers with his 14.8 ppg average. He led MIT and the NEWMAC in steals and recorded eight 20+-point games. The MIT career record holder in assists and steals, he is the first MIT men's basketball player to be named All-NEWMAC in each of his four seasons. He closed his career in MIT's top-10 in scoring (1,625 points), free throw percentage (.753), assists (550) and steals (254).
