MIT Cruises Past Newbury, 71-53
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Thanks in part to some strong, second-half three-point shooting from sophomores Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) and Ryan Frankel (New York, N.Y.), MIT broke open a close game and went on to take a 71-53 win over Newbury College in a non-conference men’s basketball game. Pedley finished with 20 points while Frankel tossed in a career-high 17 to lead the Engineers to the victory.

MIT Edges Salem State, 61-57
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT led by 12 points with seven minutes to play and then held off a late rally by Salem State University to take a 61-57 victory in men’s basketball action this evening. Junior Andrew Acker (Merion Station, Pa.) and sophomore Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) each had 15 points to lead the Engineers. Junior Bryan Ortiz (Salem, Mass.) led the Vikings with 19 points off the bench.

MIT Holds Off UMass Boston, 69-63
BOSTON, Mass. – MIT took a seven-point halftime lead and then held off UMass Boston in the second half as the Engineers knocked off the Beacons, 69-63, in men’s basketball action tonight. Junior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) recorded his second straight double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds to help MIT (5-2) to the victory.

MIT Claws Past Rhode Island College, 54-38
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT saw its defensive effort in the second half pay off as it held Rhode Island College to just 19 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes, helping the Engineers to a 54-38 victory over the Anchormen in men’s basketball action this afternoon. Junior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) led MIT (4-2) with 14 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, while Junior Chris Burton (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was the only player in double figures for Rhode Island College with 11 points while also leading the team with five rebounds.

Tufts Pulls Away Late to Defeat MIT, 77-61
MEDFORD, Mass. – Junior Andrew Acker (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as Tufts University pulled away in the final five minutes to break open a close game and take a 77-61 victory over the Engineers. Tommy Folliard led Tufts with 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Redfield’s Double-Double Leads MIT Past Curry, 69-62
MILTON, Mass. – Junior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) scored a career-high 27 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the MIT men’s basketball team to a 69-62 road victory over Curry College this afternoon. The Engineers built a 17-point second half lead and then held off a comeback attempt by the Colonels, who were led by Antonio Jones’ 16 points.

MIT Falls to Bridgewater State, 61-49
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A cold shooting second half for the MIT men’s basketball team allowed Bridgewater State University to pull away from the Engineers over the final 20 minutes as the Bears took a 61-49 win in Rockwell Cage. The victory was the 300th career win for Bridgewater State head coach Joe Farroba. Junior Michael Lofton (Mansfield, Mass.) led the Bears with 16 points while junior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) led the Engineers with 13.

MIT Rolls Past Gordon, 67-48
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT used an 8-2 run to close out the first half, breaking open a close game to help the Engineers to a 67-48 victory over Gordon College in men’s basketball action tonight in Rockwell Cage. Junior Paul Dawson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) set new personal highs with 17 points and eight assists to lead MIT. Junior Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) led the Fighting Scots with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

MIT Opens With 68-52 Win Over Lesley
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT saw its men’s basketball team open the 2013-14 season tonight with a 68-52 victory over Lesley University. The Engineers took their first lead in the game two minutes in and never trailed again and were led by sophomore Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) who hit seven three pointers on his way to a career-high 23 points.

Harvard Runs Past MIT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In what has become a tradition over the last few years, the MIT men’s basketball team traveled just down the street to take on Harvard in a beginning of the season matchup. In a contest that is an exhibition on the Engineers schedule and a regular season game on the Crimson’s, Harvard took advantage of its experience and athleticism early on and cruised to a 79-37 victory. Junior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) led MIT with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Men’s Basketball Second in Preseason NEWMAC Poll
BOSTON, Mass. – MIT’s men’s basketball team has been picked second in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) preseason poll announced by the conference today. WPI was picked as the favorite to win the 2013-14 title, with Babson College following MIT in third in the poll.

Men’s Basketball Announces 2013-14 Freshman Class
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT’s men’s basketball program has announced that six players will make up the 2013-14 freshman class. The group will join the roster of an Engineer squad that finished 20-6 in 2012-13 and tied for first-place in the final New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference standings.
