Austin, Texas (February 9) -- MIT men's basketball senior Tim Butala (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore Dakota Pierce (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) have both been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Teams for their academic and athletic performances. Both Butala and Pierce earned All-District recognition for the first time in their careers.
Butala, a team captain and the team's lone senior this season, is a mechanical engineering major that boasts a 3.76 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Starting all 22 games, Butala averages 14.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the field. He also shoots 84.7 percent from the free throw line, has 20 double-digit scoring games and has four double-doubles. He also has three games with 20 or more points, including the team's road win at WPI on Wednesday evening.
Pierce, who is an aerospace engineering major with a 3.92 GPA, has appeared in 21 games with 20 starts and is averaging 11.2 points per game to go along with four rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Shooting 43.9 percent from the field, Pierce has knocked down 33 percent of his three-point chances while recording 13 double-digit scoring games and a pair of 23-point games.
