Westwood, Mass. (February 20) -- MIT junior guard AJ Jurko (Weston, Fla.) has been named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a pair of victories last week. This is the second NEWMAC Player of the Week award in the last three weeks for Jurko.
After last week's wins over Clark and WPI, the Engineers concluded the regular season with a 20-5 overall record and a 10-4 mark in league play. This marks the third straight 20-win season and the program's 10th under head coach Larry Anderson.
Jurko averaged a double-double at 19 points and 11.5 per game as he also added five rebounds and 2.5 steals. In the road win at Clark, Jurko tied the MIT single-game record with a career-high 14 assists while shooting 70 percent from the field and 75 percent from three for the week. In a home win over WPI in the regular-season finale, he led the team to the 12-point win as he finished with 24 points behind 8-for-11 shooting from the field.
The Engineers, who are ranked No. 25 in this week's D3Hoops.com National Poll, enter this week's NEWMAC Tournament as the defending champions and the No. 3 seed. MIT takes on No. 2 seeded Babson College in a 3:30 p.m. start at Blake Arena in Springfield, Mass. in the second semifinal, while Springfield hosts the winner of WPI in Wheaton beginning at 1 p.m.
