Varsity Heavyweights Top No. 17 BU; Lose to No. 3 Wisconsin
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT's varsity heavyweights
faced another tough challenge this Sunday, with a three-way race
against the nation's third-ranked crew, Wisconsin, and local rival
Boston University, which entered the weekend ranked No. 17 in the
national polls. MIT was unranked coming in to the race, and was
expected to finish third.
While Wisconsin rowed to form and finished first in a time of 5:43, MIT stunned BU by coming from nearly a length behind to finish one second ahead of the Terriers, in a time of 5:54.5.
The Engineers took the lead in the third 500 of the 2000 meter race, and held off a determined BU sprint in the last twenty strokes.
Said varsity coach Tony Kilbridge, "I don't know when MIT last beat BU, but it has been a very long time. This was a big win for us, and I'm extremely proud of this crew."
Next up for the Tech heavies is their league championship, the Eastern Sprints, on May 18.
