2009 Heavies Win Rusty Callow Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT’s 2009 varsity heavyweight crew received the Russell S. Callow Memorial Award, which is presented each year by the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) to the crew that, in the previous racing season, best personified the virtues of “spirit, courage and unity.” The honor, which is voted on by the league’s head coaches, has been presented annually since 1963.

Rusty Callow was a legendary rowing coach, whose career spanned the first half of the 20th century. He guided the programs at Washington, the University of Pennsylvania, and Navy for many years. Among his list of illustrious accomplishments, Callow’s 1952 Navy crew captured the Gold Medal at the Olympic Games.
