  • Men's Fencing Edges Out BC at the Beanpot

    The MIT men's fencing team defeated Boston College, 14-13, in the final round of the Beanpot on Wednesday. Earlier in the night, the Engineers fell to Brandeis University (17-10) and Harvard University (20-7). Sophomore Sheel Patel (El Paso, Texas) racked up a 6-1 mark for the epee squad while senior Tzer Wong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) led the sabre team with a tally of 6-3. Sophomore Chris McKinney (Concord, Mass.) was the top performer for the foil unit with a record of 2-4.
  • Epee Squad Shines for Men's Fencing at Sollee Invitational

    The MIT men's fencing epee unit amassed a ledger of 35-10 at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Sheel Patel (El Paso, Texas) won 13 of his 14 epee bouts while senior Tzer Wong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) powered the sabre contingent with a 12-3 record. Sophomore Avi Zeff (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the foil team with a 6-1 performance. As a team, the Engineers defeated Hunter College (21-6), Haverford College (16-11), and Stevens Institute of Technology (16-11) but fell to NYU (17-10) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (17-10).
  • Men's Fencing Wins Five of Six at NFC Competition

    In its return to action, the MIT men's fencing team wrapped up Northeast Fencing Conference competition by defeating five of its six opponents on Sunday. The Engineers topped Brown University (16-11), non-conference foe University of Florida (23-4), Tufts University (24-3), Dartmouth College (22-5), and host Boston College (15-12) but fell to Vassar College (14-13). Freshman Joshua Talbot (Verona, N.J.) powered the foil team with a 14-2 ledger while senior Tzer Wong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) paced the sabre squad unit with a 13-2 record. Freshman Nyle Sykes (Greenwood Village, Colo.) led the way for the epee squad with a tally of 10-2.
  • Men’s Fencing Earns Two Victories at Brandeis Invitational

    Facing its toughest competition thus far, the MIT men’s fencing team generated a 2-3 ledger at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers (6-4) defeated the University of Incarnate Word (17-10) and Cornell University (20-7) but fell to Yale University (18-9), St. John’s University (23-4), and the University of North Carolina (17-10). For the second straight competition freshman Nyle Sykes (Greenwood Village, Colo.) produced a 10-1 epee record as senior Tzer Wong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) led the sabre unit with a 12-3 total. Freshman Joshua Talbot (Verona, N.J.) paced the foil squad with a 4-8 mark.
  • Epee Squad Powers Men’s Fencing at NFC Competition

    Powered by a 40-5 performance by the epee squad, the MIT men's fencing team generated a 4-1 ledger at its first Northeast Fencing Conference competition which was hosted by Brown University on Saturday. The Engineers defeated UMass (20-7), University of New Hampshire (27-0), Boston University (23-4), and Sacred Heart University (19-8) but fell to Brandeis University (16-11). Freshman Nyle Sykes (Greenwood Village, Colo.) paced the epee team with a 10-1 performance while senior Tzer Wong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) led the sabre squad with a 12-1 record. Sophomore Avi Zeff (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the top performer for the foil unit with a tally of 9-3.
  • Tzer Wong Claims Gold Medal at The Big One Invitational

    MIT senior Tzer Wong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) captured the sabre Gold medal at the season-opening The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. The men's fencing team also saw freshman Nyle Sykes (Greenwood Village, Colo.) earn Silver in the epee competition as sophomore Sheel Patel (El Paso, Texas) claimed seventh place. In foil action, freshman Joshua Talbot (Verona, N.J.) and sophomore Avi Zeff (Philadelphia, Pa.) rounded out the Engineers top-10 finishes by ranking fifth and 10th, respectively.
  • Olympic Gold Medalist Johan Harmenberg Speaking on Friday, October 13th

    Cambridge, Mass. (October 12) -- On Friday, October 13th, former MIT fencer and 1980 Olympic gold medalist in Epee, Johan Harmenberg, will be lecturing at MIT on new research in the sport of fencing.
