MIT Splits at NFC Competition

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's fencing team capped off Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition this past weekend at Boston College. The Engineers defeated Sacred Heart University (17-10) and Dartmouth College (18-9), but fell to the host Eagles (15-12) and Vassar College (14-13). Tech's conference record improved to 6-3 as its overall ledger moved to 6-9.

The foil team had the best outing for MIT as it amassed a 24-12 mark including an 8-1 win over Dartmouth. Spencer Sugimoto won 10 of his 12 bouts as Richard LaGrandier finished with a total of 8-3. Benjamin Switala posted a record of 6-6 while Jason Chan fell in his only bout.

Powered by a 6-3 victory over Sacred Heart, the epee squad went on to notch a 20-16 record. Matt Gethers led the way with an 8-4 performance while Jeremy Hurwitz and Gabriel Chan both finished with ledgers of 6-6.

The sabre team registered a total of 16-20 that featured 5-4 decisions over Sacred Heart and Dartmouth. Igor Kopylov paced MIT with a 10-2 outing as Rangarajan Nadadur finished at 3-8. Maximilian Brand and Matthew Farrell rounded out the contingent with marks of 3-9 and 0-1, respectively.
