March 21, 2006

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Spencer Sugimoto became the first foilist in the history of the MIT men's fencing program to capture All-America honors after he placed 11th at the all-division NCAA National Championship last weekend. He recorded the Engineers' highest finish at the national level in foil since Russell Holtz placed sixth in 1984-85. In addition, Sugimoto is the first person to collect All-America plaudits since Keith Lichten was tabbed after a second-place finish in epee in 1994-95.

Igor Kopylov also made the trip to Houston, where he placed 20th in the sabre for Tech's best showing in five years. The outstanding performances from this duo resulted in a 20th-place ranking in the team standings.
