CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In its first Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition of the season, MIT defeated Tufts University (21-6), UMass-Amherst (16-11), University of New Hampshire (21-6), and Boston University (24-3) before falling to Brown University (16-11). Igor Kopylov paced the Engineers' efforts by winning 13 of his 15 bouts.

The epee team notched the best record of the day as it finished at 33-12 behind an 8-1 victory over BU and a pair of 7-2 wins versus Tufts and UNH. Matt Gethers powered MIT with a 12-2 mark, followed by Jeremy Hurwitz (11-4), Gabriel Chan (8-6), and Javier Ordonez (2-0).

Like the epee team, every member of the foil squad registered a winning record as it compiled a mark of 30-15, including a sweep of BU and 7-2 decisions over UMass-Amherst and UNH. Spencer Sugimoto's tally of 11-3 led the way as Sebastian Castro posted a 9-4 ledger. Benjamin Switala went 7-6 while Richard LaGrandier notched three victories out of five bouts.

Kopylov's strong showing helped propel the sabre team to an overall mark of 30-15 as it defeated Tufts (8-1), UNH (7-2), and BU (7-2). Rangarajan Nadadur finished with a 9-3 mark while rookies Maximilian Brand and Nurzhas Makishev rounded out the group with ledgers of 4-2 and 2-4.
