MIT Men's Fencing Dominates Field

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's fencing team opened Northeast Fencing Conference action at Brown University this past weekend. The Engineers posted victories over Boston University (22-5), UMass-Amherst (17-10), University of New Hampshire (26-1), and Tufts University (21-6).

The epee squad, comprised of Trevor Chang, Michael Beregovsky, Matt Gethers, and Gabriel Chan, had the best showing for Tech as it posted a 32-4 record. The quartet orchestrated a sweep against UNH and defeated UMass and Tufts, 8-1. Chang and Beregovsky led the way with marks of 11-1. Gethers went 8-1 while Chan finished with a 2-1 ledger.

The sabre corps had an equally strong showing with a 28-8 record. Igor Kopylov, William Walsh, Brian Quattrochi, and Namit Setia collaborated for three 8-1 wins. Quattrochi finished the day with a 10-2 record with Kopylov coming in second on the squad with a 9-2 mark. Walsh contributed an 8-3 ledger as Setia went 1-1.

Spencer Sugimoto and Jason Chen anchored the foil team with a pair of 10-1 finishes, en route to a 27-9 total. MIT did not drop a bout against UNH and defeated BU with an 8-1 performance. Benjamin Switala and Sebastian Castro both posted .500 records as Switala went 5-5 and Castro notched a 2-2 mark.
