CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With two goals and six assists, senior Corey Garvey reached the 100 career-point mark in MIT's 12-3 victory over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League tilt on Wednesday night. The Engineers extended their winning streak to four while raising their record to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in conference action. The Buccaneers, led by two goals from Chris Davis, saw their ledger dip to 2-10 on the year and 0-4 in the Pilgrim League.
MIT registered four unanswered goals in the first quarter, including three during the first 5:15 of play. Garvey notched back-to-back unassisted markers while a quick pass from Gabe Blanchet to Nick Sisler capped the opening spurt. Carl Tilbury then converted a feed from Garvey midway through the frame, recording what proved to be the game-winning goal. On an MIT clearing attempt, Connor Burke picked off MIT goalie Christopher Rullan's pass at midfield and sprinted for the open-net goal to put Massachusetts Maritime on the board.
Just 27 seconds into the second stanza, Bryan Beller scooped up a groundball following a Buccaneer turnover, tossed it to Garvey who set it back to Beller for the first goal of his career. Garvey found Sisler three minutes later, extending the Engineers' lead to 6-1, which would hold through the intermission.
The duo collaborated on a man-up goal at the 12:32 mark of the third quarter before Garvey set up John Kucharczyk for an extra-man tally. Tilbury then redirected a pass from Sisler to give MIT a 9-1 advantage heading into the final frame.
The Sisler-Garvey tandem returned early in the fourth quarter and Sisler then found Kucharczyk for another man-up goal. Massachusetts Maritime won the ensuing face-off, which led to Nick Bronski setting up Davis for a man-down strike with 9:30 on the clock. The Engineers replied with Tilbury connecting on a pass from Blanchet for their fourth extra-man goal of the night. The Buccaneers closed the scoring on a Davis goal as Parker Simon earned the assist.
In addition to his game-high scoring performance, Garvey added three groundballs. Sisler finished with four goals and two assists as Tilbury registered a hat-trick. Kucharczyk found the back of the net twice while Blanchet posted two assists. Alex Andrzejewski, Eric Zuk, and Beller each picked up three groundballs as Rullan turned away 15 shots.
Peter Menard paced Massachusetts Maritime with eight groundballs, followed by three from Ben Wilbur, who also went 9-of-12 in face-offs. Will Doucette won all five of his face-off attempts while the Buccaneers finished the night at 15-of-19. Nate Lawson earned three caused turnovers as Ryan Delaney contributed two of his own. In net, James Hitchings collected 11 saves.
Both squads continue conference play on Saturday, April 24. MIT will travel to Babson College while Massachusetts Maritime will host Springfield College.
